Vertical video takes up more of the screen on a phone, which is where most Pinterest browsing happens, so 9:16 or 2:3 usually works best for how-to and recipe clips. Square is a safe middle ground. Very wide video fits the allowed range but appears small.
The cover image
A video pin needs a cover: the still people see before it plays. Choose a frame that shows the subject clearly rather than a black first frame, and make sure any text on it is readable at thumbnail size.
How long should a video pin be?
Pinterest allows up to 15 minutes, but most video pins are short. A clip that shows the result or the key step in the first few seconds tends to suit a browsing audience, then you can add detail afterwards.
